Which elevator apprenticeships are taking applications?

Why the close date can fool you

Every one of these windows has a cap. Chicago takes 600 applications, Shreveport only 150. When the cap is reached, the window shuts, whatever the calendar says. Seattle's window opened on September 1, 2026 and had already filled when we checked on September 18.

So the useful date is the opening one. Have your documents scanned and ready before it, and apply that morning.

What you need before you apply

These are NEIEP's rules for every IUEC local. Individual recruitments can add to them, so read the one you are applying to.

What happens after you apply

1. The aptitude test. Arithmetic, reading comprehension, mechanical comprehension and tool knowledge. You need 70 percent to go on.
2. The interview. Again 70 percent to receive a rank.
3. The hiring list. Your rank is based on your interview score, and employers hire from the list in rank order.
4. The wait. Your rank stays valid for two years, or until the list runs out.

First-year apprentices typically earn 40 to 50 percent of a journeyperson's wage and climb from there. Fully qualified, the middle of the field earns $102,420 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
