Before the window opens

  1. Scan your diploma or GED now. NEIEP asks for a copy of your high school diploma or equivalent, and this recruitment wants proof of education uploaded with the application.
  2. Check you qualify. At least 17 to apply; 18 to be registered as an apprentice. Authorized to work in the United States.
  3. Have $25 ready if a fee applies, on a card you can use online.
  4. Apply on the opening morning. With a cap of 400, waiting is a gamble.

After you apply

You sit the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test, which covers arithmetic, reading comprehension, mechanical comprehension and tool knowledge, and you need 70 percent. Then an interview, where 70 percent earns you a rank. Your rank comes from the interview score, employers hire from the list in that order, and the list stays valid for two years.

First-year apprentices typically earn 40 to 50 percent of a journeyperson's wage. Across the country, fully qualified elevator installers and repairers earn a median of $102,420, with the top tenth above $138,910 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2023).
